Chapter three’s main focus was to break down and take a more in depth look at the many categories of race, class, gender, and disability in the classroom and how each of them affect what we do and how our classroom operates. He starts by talking about a future whereby several restaurants in the biggest cities across the world serve all the cuisines of the world, Thai on Monday, Italian on Tuesday, Szechuan on Wednesday and many others without any problem. Basically, his main point is that according to multiculturalists this kind of development would be a great way to embrace multiculturalism worldwide.
Cultural diversity is also called multiculturalism. It is having a heart and mind that acknowledges, accepts values and celebrates different ways via which people live and interact all over the world. Now what is discrimination? Is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. The key objectives of the multiculturalism
In Rethinking Multiculturalism after its ‘Retreat’: Lessons from Canada, Elke Winter discusses how countries that adopted multiculturalism policies have backtracked from multiculturalism as a normative framework for the integration of immigrants in the society. Winter argues that the theoretical framework now includes the process of socioethnic leveraging that constructs the “multicultural we” as the other against the dominant “us”. She reveals that socioethnic leveraging can be fairly integrative, but can also reinforce minority marginalization. Winter thus examines who is included in the Canadian “multicultural we” by analyzing dominant discourses (the media and government) and by juxtaposing two periods: the 1990s and the early 2000s.
C. Multiculturalism, Ethnicity and Race Before presenting the field work and in order to set the framework for this research about Multiculturalism in Classical Ballet Companies Nowadays, it is appropriate to define first of all the basic concepts of this study. The key terms, will be described briefly based on what is found in general theoretical works about these concepts and based on the course ‘Discours et Multiculturalité’, taught by Laura Calabrese at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Multiculturalism creates a pleasant path with peace and harmony. To the opposite, when people are enforced to assimilate into the Egyptian culture, it causes them to feel bitterness, and is more likely to maintain their cultural heritage in a secret manner. If we look at a society where multiculturalism is supported, all individuals are inspired to practice their own culture out in the open. This gives people the opportunity to get to know a variety of different cultures, which is in our situation important. Thereby, this guides the society, on the long run, to a greater understanding between cultures and fewer misunderstandings.
Multiculturalism enables different ethnic groups, belief and value systems to co-exist. Individuals are more able to carry out their own practices in a diverse society that is familiar with different cultures, thus drawing immigrants. It makes for higher tolerance and greater respect for the customs and cultural aspects of others. In consequence, such individuals profoundly help shape and influence the perception and cultural landscape of their adopted nation and its people. This is demonstrated in popular culture, throughout the literary world, in television, films and music.
A challenge like no Other! A handshake, a tight hug, a gesture like bowing down, a kiss on the cheek, or something quite unique like sticking one’s tongue out at someone are all results of multicultural cities. According to Hutchison (2017), at the beginning of the third millennium, more than half of the global population lives in cities and economic integration as well as globalization fueled what is called cultural diversity and originated what is known now as multicultural cities. Sociology dictionary describes the multi-cultural society/city as “a society characterized by cultural pluralism”; one society rejoices cultural mixtures such as linguistic, religious, ethnical diversities (Encyclopedia.com, 2017). The wealth of multicultural cities poses challenges to the multicultural cities and their citizens.
Multicultural Education: Theory and Application For the purpose of this study, Multicultural Education as conceptualized by Banks (1984) and complimented by Campinha-Bacote’s Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare, partially forms the theoretical framework. Banks identified the following five concepts as dimensions of multicultural education: Content Integration, Knowledge Construction, Equity Pedagogy, Prejudice Reduction, and an Empowering School Culture and Social Structure. According to Banks (1993), the many passionate debates on multicultural education generally obscured the theory, research, and growing consensus among multicultural education specialists about its nature, aims, and scope and a significant gap
Multicultural approach The practice of giving equal attention to various altered backgrounds, for instance an undergraduate classroom with students from several different countries and who speak different languages. A process of communicating where more than one cultures, communicating to each other and sharing ideas , thoughts and opinion and creating an interesting environment. However discussing basic characteristics of culture will have student refine their understanding of culture today. (Scupin, 2012) Multiculturalism Cultural diversity arising from the existence within a society, it acknowledges the importance of beliefs, values and ways of life in establishing a sense of self-worth for individuals and groups alike.
Our country, Malaysia is a small, tropical country that lies within South-East Asia. Although it is small, it has a number of things to boast about. And the most prominent among these things is its multiracial community. This is due to people of different races living together in harmony within the borders of this little country. This has shaped Malaysia into a melting pot of vastly different cultures and religions, creating diversity.
The definition of multiculturalism is when you have cultural diversity within a society. Many people assume that having a multicultural society is a great thing, and in most ways it is.
