I enjoyed reading this article because it was very informative about the program of intergenerational playgroup. Prior to this article I knew of IPP, but after reading about a research study and it is statistical evidence about how effective the program can be it is hard not to be interested. This article was a learning experience for me as a professional and as a person because I may not work with older adults right away after I graduate it gives me a good foundation. The population is growing older and older and you will come in contact with older adults sooner or later in life so it is important to have a wide variety of skills in that setting. All of the benefits that this particular program offers for older adults with and without dementia
The media has the ability to influence public opinion and political discourse. By giving the Latino community a voice, the media can raise awareness about issues that affect them and mobilize them to action. The media can highlight Latinos' accomplishments and contributions in a variety of fields, including politics, business, education, and entertainment. It can also highlight the discrimination and difficulties that Latinos face on a daily basis, such as access to healthcare,
The Uncut Version of Prison by Andrew Johnson Andrew Johnson's life narrative is marked by significant challenges and transformative experiences. Expelled from his home at the age of 13, he encountered issues with substance abuse and minor criminal activities. His trajectory led him to 18 years of incarceration within California’s penal system, an experience that profoundly illuminated both personal shortcomings and systemic flaws within the justice framework. During his time in maximum security prisons, Johnson demonstrated resilience and commitment to self-improvement by obtaining his GED, two Associate of Arts degrees, and two Associate of Arts for Transfer degrees. Upon his release, he pursued higher education full-time at California State University, San
Race has become an integral part of our society, determining how we act, where we live, how educated we are; all aspects of life are touched by the constructs of race. Media has come to play an essential role in this, "perpetuating the effects of... historical oppression and... contributing to African-Americans' continuing status as second-class citizens. " As the concept of race has come to develop in this country, it has become something that has rooted itself into the minds and lifestyles of those across it, media acting as the medium to which stereotypes and ideas regarding race are promoted and justified.
Stereotypes in media have been around since the earliest cartoons were drawn. The media gives supposedly identifying traits with images of the stingy Jewish man, the single Hispanic woman cleaning homes to raise her three children, and the “butch” lesbian falling for the beautiful blonde who just happens to glance at her every day in the hallway. These portrayals make up general knowledge about minorities for a lot of people, but their accuracy is questionable at best. While production companies have been making strides towards the better, insufficient representation in the media tends to portray minorities as their negative stereotypes rather than as people.
The year is 2016 and American society is open-minded to so many issues, except televised stereotypes. Racial and gender stereotypes are continually reinforced by social media and television, it has played a major role in the way society views one another. Enabling stereotypes that have been associated with a person of specific race or gender in the media promotes prejudice. Meaning society expects that person to act a certain way based on what they have witnessed on television or social media. . A perfect example of how television shows incorporate stereotypes based on ethnicity is the tv show “Everybody Hates Chris “which is about a working class African-American family that lives in a poor urban neighborhood in New York.
With the undeniable truth, everyone must age and grow older. Although this is a natural process of life, not everyone is accepting of this. At this age, being an older adult you face difficulties such as aging, sexuality, relationship dynamics and having to face reality that you are not in your prime as you once were. Heart attacks, strokes, and other ailments are examples of this. However, just as there younger counterparts they still able to do somethings they were able to do in their earlier stages.
Community Action Project We all live in a society where criticism is inevitable. People are afraid to express any pride in their nationality due to the fear of being judged by everyone around them. Racial microaggressions affects one’s ability to freely express their racial backgrounds without the fear of being inaccurately represented. Individuals of different ethnics are assuming what others are like based on their appearances in the media.
Personally I think we should just acknowledge the world is experiencing non dominante cultures become more and more dominante. The fac that we have not seen these cultures portrayed correctly is just an dimension of theresearch we are not doing. We need to research cultutres and understand them before we can start exploting the sterotypes we see on televison. If we can collectively understand a culture and repect it then we can learn how to create media representing the cultutus acuratly. It is important that we look at stylistic choices in the under a cultural umbrella so we are no offending any culture;s valued and belifs.
More than 15% of the population has some form of disability and yet in pop culture this demographic is seldom seen or valued in a positive manner. In movies and television for example, only about an estimated 1% of the characters are portrayed with a disability (World Report on Disability). In some genres, such as science fiction, disabilities are common trope used to indicate evil or to draw out a negative emotional response from the audience. Rarely is it ever assigned to leading roles (Ellis 59). In this paper I will argue that Mad Max: Fury Road does not follow this prevailing trend, but successfully includes disabled characters as positive and active participants.
“By 1960, 90 percent of U.S. homes owned one” (Phruksachart, 100). The statistic this quote is referring to this the rise of televisions in America. Recently, television has taken steps in an effort to include more diversity in their shows an example of this is seen in ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat. Following the life of Eddie Huang, a middle schooler who has just moved from Chinatown in DC to a predominantly white neighborhood in Florida, Fresh Off the Boat is a sitcom that that showcases some struggles immigrant families face. The show brings the question, are these inclusive shows being handled correctly?
There are many controversial topics that we see on a daily basis through the media. Some of the topics that we are exposed to are race, stereotypes, sexism and sex. These things seem to be a key factor in how media makes its presence felt. Whether it is through T.V. shows, how stereotypes and race are still a common trend in present day movies. I believe that stereotyping is everywhere you look movies and T.V. in particular but also music.
Introduction There is never a single viewpoint to an issue. Different people can contribute different points of view based on different experiences, ideologies, and upbringings. In western countries such as Canada, this is a defining feature of our culture. Canada’s accepting outlook on immigration has resulted in a mixing of worldviews amongst its people. As such, cultural diversity in the media has also become key for preserving and maintaining democracy through participation.
Embracing diversity in the media is important because it will shed light on the importance of protecting against racial stereotyping. Racial stereotyping is a well know problem that all minorities have faced. Racial stereotyping is when a person has preconceived notions on a person because they are of a certain race. A great deal of stereotyping stems from the media’s lack of diversity that has casted stereotypes towards minorities.
My generation defines what it means to be an American as living in a country that is much more tolerant. Kids in other countries aren’t as fortunate as us for a number of reasons, but one one them is because in other countries the people there are way less tolerant than they are in America. In other countries they don’t have the freedom that we have to do things like practice our own religion and be able to go to school and learn to get us prepared for life when we’re older. My generation is blessed to have been born in such a great country. Something else my generation also thinks of an American identity as is having freedom.
