The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)’s 2015 brochure “Music Therapists are Board Certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists” gives a definition of what music therapy is:
Music therapy is the specialized use of music by a credentialed professional who develops individualized treatment and supportive interventions with people of all ages and ability levels to address their social, communication, emotional, physical, cognitive, sensory and spiritual needs.
The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) offered a definition of their own on the AMTA website:
Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship
