My Ecological Footprint Before Doing The Calculator

Footprint I felt pretty uncertain about my ecological footprint before doing the calculator. Once I finished it I couldn’t believe that the result was 3.7 earths if everyone lived like me. I know I’m not the most responsible when it comes to the subject but that is a high number. To reduce this I could probably use less electricity, drive less, and eat food that is grown closer to home. Electricity would be the easiest to cut down on since I leave electronics on while I’m gone for a few hours and sleep with the television on. Driving less would be hard to do since I walk to school and only drive to work, which is with 5 miles of home. Biking or walking to work would cut down on car use but it’s not completely ideal for working grave shifts. …show more content…

Other things such as gas I can not reduce since I don’t use it and only charged with a provider fee. I did go back to try and change the amount of recycling I do but the outcome was still 3.7 earths. After adjusting seeing how much I could reduce the amount of earths I got it down to 2.8 earths, but the adjustments to get it that low are very impractical. For a side-by-side comparison I compared the lowest I could get a US citizen and someone with the same lifestyle in South Africa. After trying to reduce the ecological footprint as much as possible it shows that living in the USA automatically puts you at a minimum of 2.8 earths while someone in South Africa of equal life got only one earth. The calculator for someone living in the USA does not say within what time frame would the 2.8 …show more content…

Seeing these similar questions leads me to believe that there is some sort of correlation between each other. Cutting down on things such as driving can reduce the impact of both CO2 and natural resources. Since driving creates CO2 from burning a natural resource called fossil fuel it can easily be seen how reducing one thing can reduce the impact on natural resources and CO2 levels. Even though some question are similar the calculators account for different factors. One example is that the ecological footprint accounts for the proximity of where the food is grown and the carbon calculator doesn’t really care where the food is from only that it is being bought. The difference between the two would be that local farming helps the ecosystem around the local area and less harmful farming is done locally instead of industrially. While carbon more cares about that the farming is happening that since its happening CO2 is being produced to get the food from the farm to the
