The story “My Favorite Chaperon” begins in an American high school. The main character, Maya introduces her family and explains how they came to America. Her family consists of Mama, Papa, Nurzhan her brother, and Aunt Madina.They came to America from Kazkahzan ,because the soviet union was separating.The way they came was through a dating magazine that Aunt Madina was in. Aunt Madina ended up marrying an American so she moved to America. After some time of Aunt Madina asking her family to come over to America they finally agreed because things in Kazakahzan were getting worse.

The most exciting part of the story is when Nurzhan gets into a physical fight.Nurzhan got into a fight because another boy was teasing him. When Maya and Papa go to Nurzhans school to speak with the principal about Nurzhan Maya doesn’t translate the exact words. Instead of translating the exact words of the principal Maya says other things, so that her brother won't be in a heap of trouble.When they got back home …show more content…

Maya got in trouble because she was in a boy’s arm. The reason she was in a boy’s arm was because two boys from the wrestling team were waiting to be picked up and so was Maya. The boys decided to play with Maya and pretend she was a weight. Papa had witnessed that and had gotten furious. Around the same time that this happened, Mama hurt her leg and couldn't do much ,so Maya had to do her jobs. Maya had to cook and clean her house and also went to her mother's job after school and cleaned houses.

After Mama’s foot healed ,Maya told her brother about the school dance. Nurzhan really wanted Maya to go. Nurzhan had a talk with his parents to try and convince his parents to let her go. Maya’s parents agreed ,but the only way she could go was if Nurzhan was her chaperon to the dance. Mama een gave Maya a necklace to wear to the dance. Ending the story Maya went to the dance and even danced with her
