In chapter four of the book “My Freshmen Year,” Rebekah Nathan looks at the perspectives of the international students at AnyU. The name of the chapter “As others see us” perfectly describes what she sought to find with her research of the internationals, how they saw American culture at the university. I can relate to this chapter in the way how Nathan describes the different views and differences of the American culture that the international students described.
I finished my last two years of High School school in fort Lauderdale, Florida. Those two years were really important to my transition to college because they taught me the American education system worked. But most importantly it taught me how American worked. So when I first came to my high school my goals were good grades and find good friends, but for my surprise it not everyone had those same goals. I come from a society in which literally having friends and social status is more important than your grades, so basically, I had in my to form a good social circle but also good grades. When it came to socializing nobody wanted to talk in class. I tried to talk to some people but most of them were two-word talks. Like Nathan stated in her research “ Many students expressed surprise at the dull reception they received and the lack of interest they perceived from American students about their experiences and background”(Nathan, 2005, page 70).I had the same experience. Nobody asked me about where I came from or why I came here, people just went to class and that is it. Most of my efforts to socialize with Americans failed. All of the friends I made were Latino.
