I do not like to read a book but I like to read texts or Facebook posts. I didn't like to read a large and big books. I like to read a short and easy story book.
My Literacy Narrative I was never truly an avid reader when I was younger. I was the oldest of five siblings and left in charge of taking care of my younger brothers and sister. I was more prone to spending time outside than reading a book. Of course, I did find myself enjoying a good mystery novel, but playing ball would always trump even a good book.
Introduction “Every school day in the United States for the past decade, more than 3,000 students have dropped out of high school (Joftus), 2000).” This is becoming an epidemic because literacy is simply not just being able to read or write your name. The rigors for the literacy curriculum have become much more complex and require students to be able to comprehend and state their input on different reading texts from a variety of sources. A vast amount of the funds from the federal government has been targeted towards the reading for primary grades. Secondary students such as high school students may find it difficult to transition to a higher reading level because of the complexity.
I should have been opened up my eyes to reading and writing because I want to be a teacher, assistant. I always liked working with kids, and I will like to be a great assistant. Since there's no way to become a teacher assistant or even a teacher without having reading and writing skills, I will have to read and write more often. It is like King says "If you want to be a writer, you must do to things above all others: Read a lot and write a lot" (72, 73). If I want to be a teacher assistant or maybe a teacher one day I must ameliorate my reading and writing.
In my literacy Narrative I will be tackling two problems. The first being my illiteracy in fanti, and the second being my struggle with speaking and pronunciation when I was little. I will be covering a small moment from preschool when I first started to struggle with pronunciation, and discuss how I fixed my english, but at the same time lost any linguistic connection I had to fanti. The second problem will more primarily be focused on in the introduction and conclusion, while the first will be the subject of my small moment. The defining moment any particular will be when my teacher talks to my parents, about me having a literacy problem with speaking english properly.
The history of my literacy has been a long road of a frustration and learned lessons. As a child, I was a bit of a loner so reading and writing were the closest thing to a social life for me. The things that I bottled up inside came out through my writing and it became somewhat of a pass time for me. As long I could remember literacy as has been an important value for me in my life because from very young age I got express my true self without being judged by the outside. Even though in my later years I would deal with some heartaches and set back that lead me to give up on my love for reading.
I have been passionate about literacy from a young age through books, music and writing competitions. To me, literacy has the capability to empower individuals as being involved in literacy leaders allows younger pupils to understand literacy. Through my own research, I discovered that 99% of people living in the United Kingdom are literate, meaning that a small but significant 67800 UK citizens are illiterate. By assisting a small group of pupils in LGS with this through mentoring, it would help to enhance their self-esteem. Moreover, being a literacy leader means that you can nurture a culture of lifelong learning, as you are able to instil in others the curiosity and enthusiasm that drive continuous intellectual development.
Then when school starts we write an essay. This method doesn’t usually make me a happy reader and it makes me look down on reading which makes me want to read less. In this past summer, I was assigned 2 books, one was my choice and one assigned by the teacher. I enjoyed the one of my choice and read every day while I was reading it. Then I had to read the one my teacher assigned.
I remember the first time I read a book in its entirety—and the first book I read that I thoroughly enjoyed—because it was only a few years ago. Unlike most English majors, I was not a “born reader.” I did not read for pleasure until after I graduated high school, which was a mere four years ago. I remember during high school I did not like to read and even tried to avoid any reading unless I was forcefully assigned to for, say, a book report or some project that required reading. Because of this, I considered reading to being schoolwork—and I did not want to do schoolwork.
Reading and writing influence the way that I interact with the world. I learn new things from reading and writing, which in turn help me communicate with others because I am learning new facts and skills. My relationship with literacy is a very close one. It's helped me in many areas of my life, such as being more social. Without literacy in my life, I don't know what I'd do.
When reading a book in English class at any age… I have never liked it. Growing up I did not like reading. I knew how to do it and I thought that was good enough, I never had a book that I’d still think about certain scenes from the book and actually see something similar happen in real life and be able to know somewhat of what’s going on. When I had read the book Tuesdays with Morrie, at first I was just reading it, but the more into the book we got, as a class, I started understanding it too.
Literacy has applied over the course of my education and my life. As an education major, I believed that literacy was an ability to learn how to read and write. Furthermore, literacy has been a part of my education. I have come to an understanding that literacy is a lot more than what it seems. It’s about expressing yourself that includes your opinions and feelings.
I can recall that when I was a fourth grader I was forced to “Little House on the Prairie”. I thought I could be rebellious and not read the chapters that I was assigned. I look back and think it shouldn 't have been that hard to pick up the book and read the chapters instead of falling asleep on the floor. After this time I stopped reading for fun and skim or refuse to read the assigned books or short stories. In John Holts essay titled “How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading”, he explains his thoughts on why students hate reading when they are forced to.
My experience as a reader isn 't as extraordinary as many, but I love to read. I had some great teachers throughout my education that taught me to enjoy reading challenge oneself and not be intimidated by it. Through college and today I do not have much time to read, other than school books speech, education ,and reading. Those are the sweet books I know read.
