During the time period of 1750 to 1776, the colonists, to a moderate extent, identified as American. In Adam Gopnik 's piece “Caging of America,” he discusses one of the United States biggest moral conflicts: prison. Gopniks central thesis states that prison itself is a cruel and unjust punishment. He states that the life of a prisoner is as bad as it gets- they wake up in a cell and only go outside for an hour to exercise. They live out their sentences in a solid and confined box, where their only interaction is with themselves. Gopnik implies that the general populace is hypocritical to the fact that prison is a cruelty in itself.
“What Every American Should Know” by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy and its place in modern America. It presents a convincing argument against E.D. When you ask a non American “What does America mean to you?” , they will more often than not answer with hamburgers, obesity, NFL and Reality TV. That is okay because who doesn 't love hamburgers and football filled Sundays, who doesn 't love watching silly reality TV shows and who doesn 't love a cheat day every once in awhile? Accountability coincides with expectations, if something is expected from a subordinate and they do not meet that expectation, it is a problem. The book “Black Hearts” mainly focuses on an atrocious offense that took place in Iraq during March of 2006. Four United States Soldiers were under the influence of alcohol while guarding a traffic control point. While drunk on post, the soldiers planned to commit a crime. The soldiers left their assigned guard post in the cover of the night and made their way to a house in a small Iraqi village.
For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a desire to help people, especially those who are less fortunate than me. This trait along with life experiences are what drew me to want to pursue a career in social work. I want to be available to provide support to people when they have nowhere else to turn. My experiences in social work have taught me to celebrate the small victories just as much as the big.
