In every story there is an antagonist, and a protagonist. The antagonist is the hero of the story, and typically the most liked character. The protagonist on the other hand is disliked by several people. However, there are also characters that don’t fall into the antagonist category, but they also don’t fit into the protagonist category, these characters are somewhere in-between. In My Àntonia Lena Lingard is one of those characters that is not an antagonist, and she is not a protagonist, she is in between. Lena Lingard is a well-liked character in certain scenes in the book, and not liked in other scenes. Lena Lingard is one of the immigrant girls that is hired to work. She comes to town to work alongside of Àntonia. When Lena is first described in this book her physical features are described in great detail. Cather describes her by saying, “A plump, fair-skinned girl was standing in the doorway. She looked demure and pretty, and made a graceful picture in her blue cashmere dress and little blue hat, with a plaid shawl drawn neatly about her shoulders and a clumsy pocket-book …show more content…
She enjoys getting a lot of attention, and flirts with many men, some who were even married. But she also has a way different characteristic that shows she is hard working, and a strong woman who will stand up for herself, and her family. I think there are several people like that in our own society. People who might act one way for some people, and a completely different way for other people. Celebrities are a good example of this. Since they get so much attention, and are always on the media they crave the attention, and act a differently. If you would run into those celebrities on the street they might seem like a different person. It is because of the attention that they get that they act a certain way.
