My Torah Portion, NASO is from the book of NUMBERS. It is about a nazarite, a person who dedicated his life to serving the temple and offering sacrifices to God. NASO is also about God telling Moses to tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel. In the beginning of my Torah portion, there is a nazarite who is ending his term of service, and has to make a sacrifice to God for protecting him and granting him health. The offerings presented by the priest before God included the burnt offering, sin offering, offering of well-being and unleavened cakes and wafers. Also, the nazarite offered drinks (libations) and his cut hair which has never been cut because he is forbidden to cut his hair as a nazarite. After the offerings have been elevated towards God, the nazarite was able to drink alcohol for the first time. However, if the nazarite was more privileged then others and declared he would offer more to God, then he was obligated to offer more according to the promise he made. This message applies to both stories in my Torah portion. For example, in the first scenario, God granted the nazarite health and protection for 30 years (age 20-50). In order to repay God, the nazarite made a sacrifice to God of a sin offering, burnt offering, an offering of well-being and unleavened cakes and wafers, all in perfect condition. In the second example, God is telling Moses to tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people. If they do, God will deal kindly with the people and provide protection, health and peace to the people. However, in order to repay God Aaron and his sons have to make sure the people will link God’s name to their success. This way, they will continue to praise God and God can help them with more blessings. The point is not that God needs more recognition, but rather God desires to make our lives
