During the Patriarchal Age, God commanded sacrifices of His people. There were many different types of sacrifices. Genesis has numerous stories of sacrifices to God. The story of Abraham and Isaac is the well-known story in the Scriptures. Specifically, the sacrifice of animals was a covering for their sins and these sacrifices also foretold the coming of Jesus. Jesus would be the perfect sacrifice to die for the sins of humanity. The blood was shed for the atonement of sins. “Without the shedding of blood is no remission.” (Hebrews 9:22 King James Version). There are different types of sacrifices that we read about throughout the Scriptures. Whenever there was a specific need to give reference to God, a sacrifice would be offered up. The account of the first altar in the Scriptures is the altar that was built by Noah after the flood. “And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.” (Genesis 8:20 King James Version). “And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.” (Genesis 12:7 King James Version).
Cain and Abel brought a sacrifice unto God. He was pleased with Abel’s offering and not with Cain’s. Cain brought a sacrifice from the ground and Abel brought a sacrifice of animals. Noah offered up a burnt offering after the flood. God was pleased with the sweet aroma of Noah’s offering. God asked Abraham take His only son Isaac to a place where God commanded him to offer Isaac as the sacrifice. At the last moment God provides the ram as the sacrifice.
