In the economy we are forced to make choices of what we do with the supplies we have. We are forced to make these choices because there aren’t enough supplies to make things that everyone wants. Well just like in the economy, in life we are forced to make choices because we can’t satisfy everyone. This forces every one of us to sacrifice an opportunity to achieve the goals we have. For example, by writing this paper I am sacrificing an opportunity to watch the NFL playoffs. Now that was one example of sacrifice and it wasn’t too extreme. In the books Poisonwood Bible and Things Fall Apart, just like us, the characters in the books are forced to sacrifice things in life to achieve their goals. When they do make these sacrifices they are revealing to us what they believe in and what they value in this life. Sacrifice can be defined by Merriam – Webster as the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone. In the book Poisonwood Bible we are introduced to a character by the name of Nathan Price. Nathan Price is the husband of Orleanna , father of four daughters, and is a Baptist minister. During the book we learned that Nathan Price was in the army during World War 2. While he was in duty he was a part of the Battaan March. In this march he was wounded but luckily for him he escaped. Both Okwonkwo and Nathan experience something in their past that they try to run from, and when someone is trying to escape their past, there is nothing you can do. It may seem that the sacrifices they made were for the good of others but when looking more deeply to it, they weren’t sacrificing for the good of others.
