Recommended: Development as a writer
Babe Ruth was a baseball player who played in the 1920’s. He played on the Boston Red Sox but mainly New York Yankees. Many people at this time watched him because sports were very popular. Babe ruth a.k.a The Great Bambino, was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland.
The article by Donald Murray entitled, “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts” provides readers a better understanding of the writing process and argues that writers learn to write, by writing and rewriting. Murray also contends that writers must learn to be their own best enemy. Well, I believe I have this trait covered! I will confess, that I purposely saved this course for last, due to the number of years between my last structured learning experience and returning to school to complete a BSN degree.
Hello, I am Connor Love. I am writing this letter as a soon to be former student of Katy Leuschen 's "Waves of Change" writing 111 class. The first semester of my collegiate career has taught me many valuable lessons, from learning how to better succeed academically to how to deal with the flu without my mother. The lessons I have learned in writing class have not only helped my writing abilities grow, but also have helped me improve in other aspects of my life. During "Waves of Change" I learned how to revise my work, more importantly, that uncertainty during the writing process is normal, and revise my thinking.
Being a writer requires you to have an open mind, patience, and dedication. In the letter written by Marian Evans Lewes, an English novelist, she writes to Melusina Fay Pierce, a young woman who aspires to be a writer. In this letter, Lewes will encourage the young woman to chase after her dream of being a writer and the different challenges she’s going to have to face on being an up and coming writer. Through this letter Lewes will convey an array of rhetorical strategies to convey her feeling on becoming an upcoming writer.
Adding her own experiences provided a genuine counter argument to the common misconceptions people have about writers, and this was the most influential and persuasive part of the article, to me. This ties into previous readings we’ve had because they all stick with the same theme that writing does not come easy and you may not even realize you like it. This is illustrated in Writing with Super Pencil by Dylan DuLac. DuLac loved writing comics as a young child, but as schooling mindlessly controlled his writing and limited it to boring essays he didn’t have true emotion behind, he began to lose interest in it, until later in his life when he writes this piece. Basically, he hit a few bumps in the road when he was younger, but he eventually came back around and began to write again.
Allow me to introduce you, to the astounding Maggie Linders... She’s the lady that designed all this wonderful training and information and put it together for all of us, not to mention having the patients of the gods. Freelance Writing Riches, the place to be if you want the very best guidance and teaching if you’re thinking of becoming a freelance writer. I can tell you it felt like I hit the lottery when I found Maggie 's site, I ordered her book and joined the inner circle. I’m still new to the freelance scene; however, I’m following Maggie 's advice and that of her team and having a ball.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
My history as a writer has been a bit of a struggle of slow development. From a young age I had a hard time with spelling and this is still a trouble area for me, even with the help of autocorrect. As I grew in age and as a writer my problematic area became not including enough nitty gritty details. My bad experiences that I recall would always involve the start of writing because I struggle with beginning paragraphs. Also, I tend to use the ending paragraph to just repeat myself, so overall my first and last paragraphs are usually shit.
With the instruction given to me over the past few months, I have grown as a writer and gained confidence in my writing skills. When I
Writing is a vital part of life. Before the creation of written language human communication was limited to verbal, in-person conversations. Everything changed when writing allowed thoughts and ideas to travel farther and more efficient than ever before. Writing is a talent that we learn at an early age and only hone as we proceed through our academic careers. This being said, as with any talent every writer has strengths and weaknesses.
Nowadays every one is a writer. We write on social media every day, we send emails and short messages. However, we are not all great writers, this is the reserve of the few that put in effort and can cleverly coin a phrase. -------------------------------- I begin my journey knowing I face a myriad of challenges.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
When I hear the term writer I am reminded of the images of an elderly man sitting on an old chair next to a helpless desk, writing on a very old typewriter near a window, through which little light enters, the man in question has large glasses and plays each letter very slowly and calmly, as if he were making time while waiting for the right idea to arrive. Yes, my thought is unique, but that's what came to my mind honestly. And when I try to think of myself as a writer, my brain laughs at myself and tells me; "As a writer, I will be a total failure", "As a writer, I have no future" or "As a writer I will not even write the title". I do not like romantic novels and when I read something (very little) I enjoy fiction, comics and graphic novels.
The purpose of this letter is to introducing my portfolio and how I have improved my writing skills particularly in different genres during this semester. Also, I realized that writing is a challenge for me, particularly when I do not like writing or I do not think of myself as a good writer. However, I need to face challenges and through my academic program I can learn how to write better based on some strategies that you have already taught me. This semester I have applied some strategies as guidelines including prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Also, I have improved my writing skills through reading and analyzing different reliable articles, textbooks, and documents that were required for various assignments.
