The U.S. NJROTC mission statement says that, “Our program mission is to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.” The NJROTC is the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps. It is a secondary school program that is run by the United States Navy in schools across the nation. Neither Fort Herriman Middle School nor Herriman High School have this program and at least one must because it encourages students to have self confidence and allows them to develop great leadership skills, it provides an incentive to live drug-free and healthy, and promotes higher education. In other words, it encourages them to strive to achieve a higher level of education that can be achieved in college. In order to be a part of the NJROTC, students must “Maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement and an academic standing that warrants at least normal progression leading to graduation.” So first of all, students need to prove that they have and can maintain good grades and show “at least” normal progression which means that most will need to be above the average progression rate. This is already a step which leads to higher education. In the previously mentioned “Benefits” section, it states that, “Approximately 60 percent of the NJROTC cadets who are graduating seniors continue to higher education. The NJROTC program is motivational in encouraging cadets to graduate from high school and continue to higher education offering free ACT/SAT preparation. NJROTC cadets are better behaved, have higher attendance, are role models for the avoidance of substance abuse, have higher self-esteem, develop positive life skills, on average have higher grade point averages and graduate at a higher rate.” Those are all reasons that this program is
