1. Activity: Name Recognition Subject: English language arts, Literacy 2. Rationale: As kindergarten is starting to approach for the children, we have been working on their first and last names. The students can write out there names however for this activity they will be digging for the letters of their name. 3. Concept: First letter of a name always starts with a capital letter After the first letter of a name, all other letters are lower case. 4. Materials: • Sand table • Letters written on paper/ cardboard/ water bottle caps/buttons etc. • Marker • Sand • Spoon or Tweezers • Scissors • Magnet letters • Hand puppet 7. Before we can begin to look for our names, we need to know what type of letter does our names start with. Going around the classroom can each of you tell me the first letter of your name? Activity: Name Recognition • On paper/card board/ plastic caps write a variety of upper and lower case letters • Cut the letters out • Place both magnet letters and paper/cardboard/ plastic caps into the sand table • Mix the sand around with the letters • Have the children sort through the sand table to find the letters to their names • Use the tweezers or spoon to grab the letter in the sand • Have the students place their letters on the table • Put the letters in the correct order to spell a name 8.
