Generally, at a certain point, everyone losses their loss of innocence to fully experience the reality of life. The carpet and the books are used by both authors to illustrate transformations in characters. The narrator of The Persian Carpet by Hanan Shaykh realizes the selfishness of her mother, when she chooses to lie and betray her daughter, causing her to experience a loss of innocence filled with anger and sadness. The narrator of The Boat by Alistair Macleod realizes the cruel truth of his father’s personal sacrifices when he feels obligated to stay and help his family on the boat, rather than pursuing an education, which was his father’s only desire, causing him a loss of innocence filled with sadness and anger when he could not practice that. The use of symbolism in both short stories
In the year 1933, Adolf Hitler was named Chancellor of Germany, this marked the beginning of one of the most chaotic and devastating events in history, the descent of Germany to Fascism, the holocaust, and eventually World War Two. At the same time, however, a young American boy by the name of Joe Rantz was entering his first year of college and joining the university of Washington’s rowing team. This is a story of true honor for one’s country as well as the events of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Written by Daniel James Brown, The Boys in the Boat is inculcated because the author, before he began writing full-time, was a professor for San Jose University as well as Stanford University. Brown took favor to specializing in writing.
Daniel James Brown, the author of The Boys in the Boat, uses Joe Rantz’ story to symbolize the way America was able to find hope in a time of hopelessness and despair in the world-the Great Depression, and Nazi Germany. Joe Rantz was kicked out of his home at a very young age, even though he hadn’t done anything wrong. Joe’s mom, “Thula exploded in the face of what she saw a lax discipline... she would not live under the same roof as Joe...went back upstairs and told [Harry’s] only son he would have to move out of the house. Joe was ten” (Brown 36).
The idea of the United States having Puritan origins is still alive today. In Sarah Vowell’s, The Wordy Shipmates, the topic of how a nation affiliates itself with Puritan perspectives is introduced. She encourages one to look beyond the surface information of the first English settlers’ motives in the 1600s, and to investigate what Puritan views truly are. She mentions the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop, expressing his freedom to enforce his religious views on to a whole colony of people. The superiors of this religious group decided in the colonies what was appropriate for the society they are creating.
The Wild West brought many great stories to foreign places, with the help of regionalism it made foreign places alive to people who didn’t know of them. In Mark Twain’s “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, is based out of California during the gold rush, a man named Jim smiley is a great gambler who bets on anything and everything. He will always win the bets, until an unknown man comes along and cheats out Jim smiley out of his money. He cheated Jim out by stuffing his famous jumping frog with a teaspoon of a quill shot (Twain 665). The other story by Bret Harte “The Outcast of Poker Flat”, a gambler, a thief and other outcast are thrown out of their town.
Although his approach changes, this time seems to have stuck out the most to me. The importance of a name, is like the importance of big moments through your life. A name is what makes you yourself, how people remember you and what makes you special and unique. 4. “In America anything is possible. Do as you wish.”
The Boat by Alistair MacLeod is about a boy who grew up in a fishing town and wanted to escape it retelling his story. The Boat shows the audience the burdensome process of the protagonist choosing whether defers to carry on the family's tradition of fishery or follows his own heart and get an education. The plot of the story develops through the internal conflict of the protagonist with his own maturity. In the protagonist's youth, he views life in a state of innocence without consideration of his duty as the only son. As he grows up, he gets to know that his father’s desire to attend university was thwarted out of his responsibilities to support the whole family as the protagonist says:''... I thought it was very much braver to spend a life doing what you really do not want rather than selfishly following forever your own dreams and inclinations.''

Some people's life stories can show us the hardships that one can go through in history or the future for the upcoming generation to share their story. One of the books that i've read was ‘Night’. The author is the main character of the story, Elie Wiesel, who went through a german concentration camp that was meant for people to work till they drop, literally. The second book is ‘Boys in The Boat’, by Daniel James Brown. In this book a boy named Joe Rantz as the main character, this story talks about how he and his team won gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
I hope you had an entertaining and relaxing summer. As a part of my AP Language summer assignment, I was required to read The Boys In The Boat. I must admit I am not a heavy reader, initially I was not excited but after I grooved myself into the book I found it it to be very entertaining. I enjoyed most aspects from The Boys In The Boat but the thing I liked most was the relationships between the characters. The characters were dedicated, persistent, and hard working.

”The Open Boat” is the most frequently discussed work of American writer Stephen Crane, famous for his naturalistic writing in which human beings have no control on their lives. It is more than a narrative of adventure. In January 1897, the writer was shipwrecked and lost at sea for 30 hours. He and three other men were forced to row to shore on a ten-foot life boat. The short story was written several weeks after the harrowing accident.
