Because of the continued victories against England and Austria, this gave many military leaders fame and national recognition, thanks to this, Napoleon Bonaparte was the highest above his compatriots. Having previously saved the Convention from Paris mobs, Napoleon already had all of the government's respect. He used this advantage wisely in his quest for power.

Napoleon's coup d'état on November 9, 1799, made him dictator of France. So great was his influence on the rest of the continent that his years of rule (1799-1814) became known as the Napoleonic Era of Europe. The French heavily influenced many neighboring nations during this period. These nations developed strong feelings of patriotism and loyalty toward their own countries. This movement, developing great pride in one's country and heritage, soon they became known as nationalism.
