Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769, and died on May 5, 1821, at the age of 51. He was a French political and military leader who led campaigns during the French Revolution. He became the emperor of France in 1804 until 1814 and again in 1815. Napoleon was a negative historical figure. He was a horrible general, minimized women's rights and he was with the idea of slaves. Napoleon took away many rights from women that they had won before. He thought that women had to obey all of their husbands “commands”. If they were not married they were under their father control and still had to obey them or else they would get punished. The wives had no rights to property other than what they inherited. Now you could easily see what kind of a person Napoleon was and how he had no respect for women. Even though he knew women had helped a lot during the French Revolution, he still discriminated them. Although Napoleon won many battles, it was those battles he lost that proved significant and showed his inability to lead. Napoleon could never defeat the British. During the battle of the Nile, Napoleon's navy was destroyed by British Admiral Horatio Nelson. Napoleon then abandoned his army and quickly left for France. For such an uncompromising general who prided himself on having his army “well” prepared, his Russian campaign was an epic loss. Again, Napoleon abandons his army stating that he “had no need for a defeated army” (Cranny, 1998, pg.96-98) Only a terrible leader would leave his army behind to die or keep fighting for the sake of his reputation. Many more lives were taken unnecessarily because of Napoleon's thirst for power and his inept ability to safeguard and protect his soldiers.
