Thank you for the privilege of meeting with you, Senator Markey and Jason Allen. We, as well as Elks National President Michael Zellen and Elks Past National President Paul Helsel, appreciated the opportunity to share with you the Elks’ drug prevention awareness work. Drug use prevention has been at the heart of the Elks’ mission for over 30 years. Each year we reach nearly every school and community across the nation through drug prevention rallies, public service announcements and the distribution of millions of anti-drug brochures annually. All of this available at no cost to schools, kids or parents.
Methadone Maintenance Treatment The Methadone Maintenance Treatment (Camh) helps patients overcome an addiction of opioid dependence. The treatment uses methadone as a replacement for the opioid. Methadone is a narcotic drug that helps suppress opioid withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings for opioids, not induce intoxication (e.g., sedation or euphoria) and reduce the euphoric effects of other opioids, such as heroin (Camh). MMT is beneficial to the patient in many reasons.

So you're living in Northern Virginia and trying to deal with an addiction? Hopefully, you're close to the end of your rope and want to get help. If so, you'll probably start by looking for help in your area. It makes sense. However, there are better alternatives than a Northern VA drug rehab.
The support group I am interested in using for my Support Group Paper is a support group called Narcotics Anonymous. Narcotics Anonymous is a nonprofit organization that assists individuals to recovery from their addiction of using drugs. This type of organization has support groups that express their experiences of using drugs, how it affects the user and those closest to them, and supports each member in the support group to keep from using drugs again, as done in its support group.
For my community service assignment, I assisted the local Narcotics Anonymous chapter in cleaning out one of their many daily meeting places. Narcotics Anonymous is a global non-profit organization which overviews an extensive drug abuse recovery program which utilizes strict tenets in an overarching support-group style program to facilitate recovery from drug abuse. Narcotics Anonymous has no official leaders and little overall structure, aside from a collection of basic agreed upon texts that are distributed to chapters worldwide, which lay out the basic tenets of the NA program in full for members to follow. Instead, there is one central Narcotics Anonymous organization that organizes annual conventions, distributes organization texts,
I attended an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting. The focus of AA is a non-discriminatory, non-denominational, free membership group for those who wish to stop drinking alcohol. As stated by one of the members in the group I attended, “we are here to help other people stop drinking just like others have all helped us.” The main goal is to allow people to attend this meeting anonymously and not be judged and feel welcomed and comfortable admitting they need help and they are ready to stop drinking. For those who have maintained sobriety focus on discussing how they have been able to do so and share it with others.
The Harrison Narcotic Act was proposed to Congress by Dr. Hamilton Wright. This particular Act was not made to criminalize the use of any drug. However, it was considered a tax law because there was a tax imposed on individuals that made or sold narcotics. Suppliers had the responsibility of registering with the Bureau of International Revenue once a year along with paying a one-dollar fee. Since medical professionals prescribed narcotics, they also had to register and pay the fee annually or they would be punished.
As previously mentioned above, Narcotics Anonymous is a support group where individuals who are addicted to drug using can go into recovery with the help of others to cleanse themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally from drugs. The support group accepts individuals who are looking to stop their use of any illegal drugs, substance use, and alcohol consumption. An individual(s) with a problem with alcohol and substance use is viewed as an illness, based on the severity of use, and its affects it does to an individual. Alcohol and substance use can start at any age from adolescent to older adult age. An onset of alcohol and substance use can be known when/if there is an indication of it from an individual’s family history, and/or family

Opioids come in many forms, both licit and illicit drugs. Licit drugs would be considered pharmaceuticals, since they are prescribed by doctors and usually come in pill forms. Some examples of licit opioids are: OxyContin®, Vicodin®, codeine, morphine, methadone, and fentanyl. The illicit drugs would be heroin and can come in many different forms. Both forms must be consumed with caution due to their addictive nature.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA), was developed in the late 1940’s as an extension of Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA (Narcotics Anonymous World Services Inc., 2014b). However, the first documented NA meeting was in 1953, according to Project Ninety, Inc. (n.d.). The founder, Jimmy Kinnon, worked alongside others who had laid the foundation for AA (Project Ninety Inc., n.d.). Project Ninety, Inc. states that Jimmy and his co-workers worked diligently to develop the bylaws of this organization.
