Dividing by Zero It’ll all my fault. I’m the reason that it happened. Miss Jones had warned me about this. We were learning about division in math class. Miss Jones was looking at my homework when she frowned at me and warned me of the dangers of dividing by zero. She told me, “Don’t divide by zero, Timothy.” I replied “Why not Miss Jones?” I always say Miss Jones because she had told my class that it’s polite to call someone by their title. “Well, if you have 0 cookies and four friends you would know how many cookies each friend would get because if there were no cookies in the first place, each person would have 0 cookies,” she explained, so I nodded. “What if you had four cookies and 0 friends, though? You wouldn’t know how many cookies each person gets because you don’t have any friends to share them with.” …show more content…

That meant she wasn’t happy with someone, but I kept challenging her anyways. “But that doesn’t make sense! I can do it! Watch me!” I yelled at Miss Jones. “Dividing by zero causes bad things to happen, Timothy!” She yelled back and went on to talk to other students about dividing. I didn’t listen to Miss Jones. I divided by zero, and now a teacher is dead. I ran away from school during recess. I found a hole in the playground fence in second grade that never got fixed so I used that to sneak away. At first no one saw me, but I knew after recess everyone would see that my seat is empty and come looking for me, and they did. At first it was just Mrs. Smith, Miss Jones’ substitute teacher, calling my name. Then more people came. I think I could even hear the principal’s voice yelling for me to get come back. I could hear lots of people calling my name. They’re trying to catch me, I knew it! But I’m wasn’t ready to go to jail yet. I had to find a way to fix the damage. I knew I could, I just needed some time to look for
