The extreme heat of the Haitian sun beamed on our backs as we made our way down to the river to wash our clothes. Pierre called out to me “Hey Akello come here, I found something!” I rushed over to Pierre and looked in the murky water. He pushed me into the river and I felt the cool water surround me. We both had a good laugh before he extended his hand to help me up; I took it and pulled him into the water with me. We probably spent half an hour sitting in the water reflecting on life while feeling the current tug at our tattered clothes.
