A lie that had endured my whole life but didn’t define me. Amir had decided to go back to kabul and leave his american life in california behind along with a “pretty victorian home with a peaked roof, a good marriage, and a promising writing career in-laws”. Now he was going to face the violence and discrimination Taliban had endured against Hazara citizens in the old town where he was raised, and where he kept live memories from his past. Once he arrived, Rahim Khan an old family friend who was showing symptoms of having a critical disease would give him the most important news, something he couldn’t have imagined. Hassan heard footsteps and a door shutting, they slowly ran upstairs while trying to maintain silent inside a closet close to a window. As taliban soldiers approached them , he locked the door of the closet and covered their mouths with their hands. A tough voice in the background said they had received an order to go outside because a car had passed by several times and seemed suspicious. The Taliban who searched through different rooms went downstairs giving hassan and Farzana a chance to escape. They came out of the closet without regard, and hassan told his wife they would have to jump out the window if they wanted to save their child who was playing in the hut on the backyard. With no doubt they looked out the window into the length of the fall and jumped, while making a big stomping sound when they landed on a metal panel that formed part of another rooms roof in the first floor. This situations developed a great tension. As they walked towards the back, talibans were releasing big dogs that would help them in the manhunt. As soon as hassan noticed it they covered themselves in wet mud, to distract the scent. Running to the hut they found their son Sohrab, who didn’t know anything about what was happening. Then, they lied to Sohrab saying “ we will soon come back to pick up your toys, but for now we have to leave because grandma had an emergency.” All together they ran up the hill, where the pomegranate tree was and quickly thought of a plan on what to do. Taliban saw them now and were running up the hill while shooting. In the distance hassan saw a green Jeep, honking and driving reckless, he immediately knew it was Amir risking being caught and most likely killed, to save his childhood friend. Hassan told Farzana to run quickly with Sohrab into the car, to go to another city, he would meet them at a train station.
