Solomon, 15 years old and happier than ever, could not keep a smile off of his face. He had made the varsity basketball team and could finally play ball without the Sabbath being an issue. Solomon had been back and forth between public and private schools but the one thing that stayed constant was his love for God and his love for basketball. His siblings for the most part had always been in the Adventist school system and although that was home to Solomo, the one they attended was missing something for him. Basketball. “Solomon” the words sounded like pure heaven to him once they had come out of the coach’s mouth. He made it. After all the hard work and effort he had made the team. He was even more excited because he was going to have games during the week, and not on the Sabbath. He went to practices everyday and put in a lot of work. He was even going to be one of the starting guys until it happened. The schedule for the games came out and Solomon saw that all of his games were scheduled for Friday nights. What was he going to do? He wanted to keep the Sabbath but he really wanted to play basketball on a team. It was something that he had worked so hard for. Finding out that the games were on Sabbath was devastating. He talked to his parents about it and they told him to just pray and let God solve his problems. 12 year old Solomon cried. “I thought we were trying to play basketball, not baseball.”
“We are. This is just temporary.”
Solomon did not want to even think about it because basketball was the only sport he had been aiming to play. But now he started to think about how he could play on the baseball team just to fill in time until next basketball season.
Solomon played on the same baseball team for 2 years until he was 14 and a freshman in highschool. He wanted to stay at public school with all of his friends but basketball was so important to him. It was his dream.
His sister was attending an Adventist boarding Academy. It was grades nine through twelve and had a basketball team and choir. Solomon thought it would be nice to get out of the house and the idea of playing on a team where the Sabbath was not an issue made him ecstatic. He tried out and made the junior varsity team. He practiced hard every day and played even harder during the games. His goal was to make the varsity team the next year. The whole time he had been going to public school and not been able to play basketball, he had been praying. Praying that he would one day get the chance to play on a real team. God had answered that
