The brief prologue is powerfully reminiscent, engaging the readers interest when the Brennan family close “the front door of our home for the last time” The deceptively simple language communicates shame and regret and the rawness of pain is emphasised by the recurring reference to the need for silence ,’’down, down we glided in silence’’ . In Chapter 11 Holden walks down to the lobby when he all of a sudden gets stuck thinking about Jane. Holden takes a seat in a vomit colored chair and recalls memories with Jane. Throughout this chapter Holden ridicules himself, other people, and the world he lives in. The loneliness and depression Holden feels shows through in this chapter. The reader is really shown how depressing it is to live in Holden 's mind and see things the way he does.
The morning after the incident in the sewage field, the soldiers look for Kiowa 's body. Jimmy Cross helps in the search and watches his men. He sees a young soldier (this is presumably O 'Brien, but O 'Brien has chosen to tell this story in the third person) standing off by himself, shaking, in his own world. Cross thinks about Kiowa 's death, and how Kiowa, a brave and decent kid, absolutely didn 't deserve to die in a field of sewage.
Overall Kiowa was known for being a kind troop, a man with his beliefs straight, and a well respected human being. Kiowa indirectly sets himself up as a very well rounded, gentleman numerous times in this book by what he says and thinks. For example, While everyone else harassed the inexperienced soldier Tim O’Brien for not shaking the dead Vietnamese man’s hand, Kiowa consoled him by saying, “‘You did a good thing today... That shaking hands crap, it isn’t decent.’” (215).
Kiowa’s death was touched upon in several stories, but the insight given to the reader of First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross’s perspective in “In the Field,” is a primary example of this. Jimmy Cross has to write a letter to Kiowa’s father concerning Kiowa’s death and he has to consider the manner in which he will write the letter. He starts off by “just saying what a fine soldier Kiowa had been, what a fine human being, and how he was the kind of son that any father could be proud of forever.” (164) Then he decides: “In the letter to Kiowa’s father he would apologize point-blank.

In this chapter, O’Brien takes his daughter out on a mini field trip in Vietnam to the place Kiowa died. He told his daughter the simplified story-truth of it all, “‘this whole war… why was everybody so mad at everybody else?’ I shook my head. ‘They weren’t mad, exactly. Some people wanted one thing, other people wanted another thing’”
The presence of a missing comrade express the horrors that soldiers face because of the extensive effort and time that the search entails. As the young men continuously search for their missing comrade, Kiowa, muck covers their bodies, which hinders their ability to identify one another. The muck and filth “seem to erase identities, transforming the men into identical copies of a single soldier” as all of the men become unrecognizable under uniform (O’Brien). With the use of symbolism, O’Brien develops a state in which the soldiers lose their sense of appearance from the filth that covers them. Kiowa, the soldier that had fallen, “was angled deeply into the muck, upside down” after a piece of shrapnel struck him (O’Brien).
O’Briens intended audience is people who have an interest in war, and uses mortality and death, along with morality to help the audience get a deeper understanding of what could possibly occur at war. The Socs have more wealth but they have problems that money can't solve. The greasers don't have much money and think that money will solve their problems when it wont. The Socs have it hard because they don't want to be good and act nice all the time like they are expected to.

Since Scout is a very young child the book contains many hyperboles, or a literary device in which an author uses specific words or phrases that exaggerate and overemphasize the basic statement in order to produce a grander, more noticeable effect. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” demonstrates the personal growth of the dynamic protagonist Louise Mallard, after hearing news of her husband’s death. The third-person narrator telling the story uses deep insight into Mrs. Mallard’s thoughts and emotions as she sorts through her feelings after her sister informs her of her husband’s death. During a Character analysis of Louise Mallard, a reader will understand that the delicate Mrs. Mallard transforms her grief into excitement over her newly discovered freedom that leads to her death. As Mrs. Mallard sorts through her grief she realizes the importance of this freedom and the strength that she will be able to do it alone.

Kate Chopin’s, “The Story of an Hour,” focuses on sixty minutes in the life of a young Mrs. Mallard. Upon learning of her husband’s death, Mrs. Mallard experiences a revelation about her future without a husband. Her life, due to heart problems, suddenly ends after she unexpectedly finds out her husband is actually alive.
In beginning, this study will compare the captivity narrative of Mary Rowlandson and Mary Jemison. These narratives of Indian captivity in the mid-17th century provide a way to understand the methods that both women employed to survive. The first similarity between these two women is related to their Protestant background, which was a normative part of colonial life in New England during this historical period. In this manner, Rowlandson utilizes the religious tenets of practical religious belief to define her captivity with the Indians: “Life-mercies are heart-affecting-mercies: of great impression and force, and to enlarge pious hearts in praises of God” (Rowlandson 10). This is also evident in the Protestant upbringing of Mary Jemison, which defines the foundations of their original cultural heritage that is shared in these capacity narratives: “For it was the daily practice of my father, morning and evening, to attend, in his family; to the worship of God”
