Nature in “A Long Way Gone” is often described as beautiful but also dangerous, for example he describes many villages out in the country do not have running water or electricity and are surrounded by bushes and jungle. Ishmael can see a grander perspective when confronted by natural beauty. Ishmael strives to be like the moon, he is adept at living off of the forest when he is stranded, and he rejoices when he sees the ocean for the first time. Also, during the story the forest is described as nature foreshadowing the evil that is coming because of the war. When we heard the Germans were attacking we grabbed whatever we could and we ran. We left everything behind, but it did not matter because the Germans bombed our village and we lost everything, we are lucky to survive. We ran for 3 days straight, no sleep, no food, no water. We did not even know if we were still in poland, but we knew we had to stop and try and find food. When we stopped where the forest screech with the sounds of war planes and tanks. We assumed we were near Warsaw. We had found some old crops that the farmers had abandoned and a water well, but we had to discuss what we do next. “How long do you think we can survive out here daddy?” I said, “Son, as long as we can. If we go into Warsaw the Germans will kill us or enslave us because we are Jewish.” Said my father. “What do you mean honey?” Said my mum. “I heard about what the nazis did in Germany, they took all of the Jewish businesses and burned them and made them wear special stars that said ‘Jude’ on it.” Explained my father. “But honey, we can not stay in the forest forever. We have to eventually go into Warsaw and accept our fate, maybe we can take off all of our Jewish belongings here and go in, they will not know we are Jewish.” said my mum.
