Orleans holds the dubious honor of being the only town in the United States to come under enemy artillery fire during World War I. A German submarine fired at and sank a tugboat towing four barges. Historians disagree whether the shells that landed on Nauset Beach and in a nearby marsh were intended for the town or other commercial vessels in the area. The crew members aboard the tug and barges were rescued, and no fatalities were reported as a result of the attack.
