Hammurabi’s code was written to protect the people of the ancient city of Babylon. However, I think otherwise. Nearly 4,00 years ago, in Babylon, Hammurabi created a set of 282 laws to protect the people that he ruled. On the other hand, I believe that his laws weren’t just to everyone.
To begin with, Hammurabi’s Laws harmed families a lot. For example, Law 129, women are tied up and thrown into water if caught cheating on their husband. This punishment doesn’t apply to men. Also, if a man strikes his father, his hands are then cut off which, in my opinion, is too extreme of a punishment. For instance, in Law 21, the “victim” could have lied to make it seem that the “robber” wasn’t caught only to get money. This makes it unfair towards the government. Also, in Law 53 and 54, the man who opened his trench had nothing to with it on purpose ye he has to restore the crops he destroyed. Furthermore, these punishments weren’t necessary. This is important because if they hadn’t done anything on purpose they shouldn’t have to receive the punishment. It is evident that the punishments weren’t fair to the innocent.
Additionally, Hammurabi’s code didn’t fully repair personal injury. For example, in Law 199, if someone hurts a slave they have to pay half of the value of the slave. However, if you hurt a free man you get a bigger punishment. In addition, if a man strikes the daughter of a free man, he shall pay ten shekels of silver. But, if a man strikes a slave girl, he only pays two shekels of silver. In my opinion, these laws should have the same consequences to the different people. Overall, Hammurabi’s Code didn’t have the right consequences.
In conclusion, Hammurabi’s Code was not just and had different punishments towards the same crimes. Also, his punishments were way too severe. Hammurabi was not a just ruler of Babylon. Many different people have opinions over this issue. How do you think Hammurabi’s Laws treated the people of
