The authors point out that the political correctness movement of the 1980’s and 90’s is similar but different from what we are currently experiencing; the current movement is driven by emotional well-being rather than protecting marginalized groups. How Censorship Impacts Everyone Censorship is a very broad topic, and many consider it harmful to both them as well as others. It goes all the way back to when literature was first developed. Many different people had different opinions on certain things so they chose to challenge it. Censorship has directly affected many authors because it is the censoring of common books that have disturbing or misleading information in them that often offends someone or even a group of people. The information in them is the root of it all.
In 1789, thirty-eight men who helped shape America into what it is now signed the Constitution of The United States of America, approving it’s message and the rights, or Amendments, listed within it. The first Amendment listed in the Constitution is the right of freedom of speech, the press, to peaceably assemble, and religion. However, in current times, citizens are challenging this Amendment by censoring the media, books, T.V shows, and movies. Why is it that people are doing this now, after nearly 230 years? Some people believe that certain information and ideas must be withheld from certain minorities and age groups, and few others believe that some ideas must be censored to everybody.
She believes the growing political correctness in our country and government censorship solves nothing and actually causes more problems than it solves (660). She claims that such actions “selectively [erase] history” (660). Reynolds claims that political correctness and censorship are actually hurting efforts to overcome racism and other acceptance issues. She states not being able to freely discuss issues such as “race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation” is harming the efforts for understanding and acceptance because individuals are not discussing them at all and therefore it hinders them from gaining new perspectives (660). She finishes her argument by stating that the bill will smother our freedom and ability to have productive conversations about Native American history in our culture (660).
Since, it isn’t justified for America to give us this right of speech, when they knock us down for using it. The Black Lives Matter Movement is proof of this, they protest over and over but the government doesn’t want to take responsibility or change for the better of the community. As a community we need to see actions taking place, not only just words. I think they are right for opposing the dominant culture, since it is going to take a lot of work for America to socially change, and we have stick up for what we believe in or them would never been any change in America. America has become a better nation with time, protests and the power of a counter culture always existing to fight for equality, no matter the gender and race.
One of the key principles that make the country great is our freedom to say, write, and read whatever we want. Despite this, countless public figures and schools have chosen to restrict access to certain books, whether it’s in order to protect political correctness or explicit sexual content and violence. Rarely do these people stop and consider the dire effects book banning might have on both students and society as a whole. An author does not write because they are looking to offend someone, they right because they have a story to share. The First Amendment of the Constitution not only works to protect this right to the fullest extent possible, but also serves to protect the rights of the people that choose to be offended by these stories.
George Washington once said, “If the freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” I agree with this quote, and feel that America should never lose this right, as it gives people freedom, unlike the society in the book, Anthem. In my opinion, America is not an Anthem society because America is a land of freedom, not censorship, due to our individual rights such as the freedom of speech, which gives us freedom of thought and expression. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech”. Some people in today’s time would argue the first amendment is one of the most important listed in the Bill of Rights. Many forms of speech are protected by the first amendment that one wouldn’t think would be such as flag burning and “adult videos”. Over the years there have been many different court cases that have debated and fought the forms of speech that are protected. Many people in society treat speech differently and this is given in the United States because there are such diverse groups throughout the nation.

Censorship is nothing but curbing the right to freedom of speech, though there are arguments for that too. Banning and censorship only makes people more curious about the matter and in turn make it popular, which is the opposite of its intention.
