The petroleum market rose in 1859 after former rail director Edwin Drake successfully unearthed an oil well with his own oil drill. After this breakthrough, investors realized that oil sites made more financial sense than whaling voyages. Whaling was dangerous, time-consuming, and expensive—while often yielding no profit. But oil drilling was generally risk-free, would not cost anyone’s life, and was more likely to yield something profitable with the reliability of Drake’s oil drill. Consequently, many whaling ports lost their funding to oil sites, and kerosene replaced whale oil as America’s leading natural resource.
From population booms to a better economy, it was all because of a single oil well in Texas. One chilly morning in 1901, a group of men were about to give up on finding oil until, BOOM! , oil came shooting out. The once poor men had now became millionaires overnight. After this day, wildcatters traveled all around Texas for black gold.
This forced many businesses to shut down. During the fall, the city went from a depressing nobody to an exciting new boom town. An oil well in east Texas was discovered! Once people heard about the oil well, they rushed into town. Within a few days’ thousands of folks flooded into Kilgore, setting up tents and shacks in every single unfilled vacant area.
The Texas oil industry began with Lyne T. Barret, who struck oil or petroleum, which is a fossil fuel that has decomposed into the ground and has been compressed and heated up for millions and millions of years. in Texas at Spindle Top Hill. In the early years, people used derrick towers that support oil-drilling equipment, which was then put in a refinery that made oil pure and used for trains to travel faster and farther. In 1904, the Spindletop strike marked the beginning of the Texas oil boom. Patillo Higgins, a brick factory owner, believed that there would be oil at Spindletop Hill.
One cold January day on the hill Spindletop, the discovery of a black, thick liquid changed the future of Texas. In January of 1901, oil was stumbled on in Texas. In the beginning of the discovery, the profit went to the Easterners, then it changed. Wildcatters, who were investors that put their money into oil rigs, spread across the state and placed oil rigs everywhere. During this time it was rare to get very rich off of oil because of the dry holes and loss of money.
1 The Deepwater Horizon was a drilling rig, which had been rented by British Petroleum (BP), in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig exploded on April 20th, 2010, pouring nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the sea over a three months’ span. This environmental crisis endangered marine wildlife, as well as workers that were injured during the explosion. Of 126 people, 28 workers in total were hurt, leaving 11 that were fatally injured, while the other 17 were severely injured (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2013).
As oil was being discovered in the state, it triggered immense industrialization across many regions, particularly in the southeast. Houston was one of the main benefactors of the oil boom. During the early 1900s the city grew at an incredible rate, rising quickly up the charts of the biggest American cities. Dallas also heavily benefitted from the success of oil and with Houston became the first Texas cities to experience heavy industrialization and development in the new century. The prosperity of oil even helped ease some of the pain that the economic onslaught of the Great Depression brought to the country.

Oil had the biggest impact on Texas’s culture and history. The oil boom caused tons of people to rush to Texas to try to find oil of their own and get rich off of that kind of lifestyle. People of every kind came to try to strike an oil well, forever changing Texas’s culture and influencing Texas history. Every group of people that came to Texas had a diverse culture and way of life, and others took up those lifestyles as well. Texas is still a major contributor of oil to the world, and we have been since the oil boom; it is one of the major profits of Texas’s current industries.

It is irrefutable that the Texas Revolution had long term effects that changed American foreign and domestic policy. The actions of one man however, was the cause of the prelude to what will become a pivotal moment in U.S. history. Samuel “Sam” Houston from Tennessee was a military leader and politician who served in the American military and the U.S. House of Representatives before moving to Texas. Although not present during the founding of the Texan colonies, Sam Houston took a stand for Texas through his military leadership, securing independence from Mexico, and setting the stage for annexation by the United States of America. Keep in mind fracking has also caused earthquakes, pollution and health issues for humans, but in the early 1980s, there was so much natural gas that all gas prices were reduced. All of that natural gas came from hydraulic fracturing or fracking.

On April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deepwater offshore rig, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico about 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 riggers and injuring 17 others.
