The influence of actors and actresses in the film industry has lead to positive and negative views on certain groups and culture. In present day, media like films use generalized stereotypes that have lead to individuals of those certain groups to be stereotyped in real life. When films use the same stereotypes over and over again, many people start to believe these generalized characteristics apply to every individual in that group. Chapter One: You Are What You See In today’s society, the media is inescapable. The advancements of technology have led to an even larger outreach of media--touching close to every person. For me, the media has always been an influence in my life. From the songs I’ve listen to, the movies I grew up watching, and the stories I’ve heard, the media has sculpted a significant portion of my identity.
My Media Activity was 1.1 Detecting Character Stereotype in Entertainment Media on Asian Americans portrayed in media. This media activity assignment was to pick three shows, films, or songs you’ve recently watched or silenced to and see how many Asian Americans were in the show. I recently watched the following film and shows: Logan, Chewing Gum, and 13 Reasons Why. For my activity I compared the three and realized that only one of them had an Asian American character.
The media has become a universal presence in our daily lives as it has the power to shape our perceptions and views. Through many platforms, ranging from television to the internet and social media, the media is constantly providing us with information. Many people rely on the media as it provides news updates on current events around the world. However, media coverage has had negative consequences as a large amount of the information provided is not all it seems to be. The media provides misleading context and images that do not accurately represent current events to attract and appeal to viewers.
The main objectives in chapter 9 include the ways media attempt to influence people’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or behavior, ways media technology can be disruptive and have adverse effects on behavior, the positive and negative influences of certain kinds of media, such as advertisements or reality television programs, on self-image. Even though media is a great outlet, media has changed our generation causing effects on self-image and human interactions. Because of its pervasiveness in American culture, the media affects people in both obvious and subtle ways. Modern media comes in many different formats, including newspapers, magazines, television, social media, etc.
Introduction In our current society, the media is a very powerful medium which cultivates the way the society thinks and behaves. At this stage of the political economy, the intellectual mode of production is largely made through the media industry. Taking a look at the threads of racial stigmas within the entertainment industry reveals a deeply ingrained and pervasive web that have the power to shape narratives, distort perceptions, and hinder progress toward authentic representation and equality. More specifically, the reinforcement of racial stigmas by White mainstream media in the entertainment industry results in the perpetuation of dehumanizing narratives that disproportionately impact Black children. Despite the existence of groups that aim to combat these harmful stereotypes in media, these narratives tend to undermine Black children’s self-esteem and restrict their opportunities. From the first moment a child is introduced to the media and to their teens until adulthood, they become part of a whole new world. The teen starts to explore the different parts of media from more social to personal areas. But, there happens to be a bad side to the media that most people are familiar with containing music such as “Gangsta Rap” that promotes gun violence, video games containing sexual imagery/ words and traumatizing movies and television shows. Since being introduced to media violence it has been affecting the ways teens and children see the media by causing aggression and behavioral changes. First, Television took the number spot for being the most violent the number one negative impact on teens.
Usually, when people express their beliefs on what the most important desideratum or possession in life is, they state whatever it is that they are lacking at the time. Whether it is health, love, beauty, shelter, family - when individuals think about what is essential, it is typically unavailable to them at that moment; that is why the most important necessity in life is self dependence. During these circumstances where we feel something is missing, we try to make others improve the issue and we often overlook that we have the power to make the change. According to AdRespect, advertising is a sturdy communication method; however, “LGBT-inclusive commercials are still relatively rare, they have tremendous power to promote visibility and change hearts and minds.” The website adds, “that’s why it is so vital that advertising is inclusive of the LGBT community while avoiding homophobia and transphobia.” According to Oxford Dictionaries, homophobia is the “dislike of or prejudice against homosexual people,” and transphobia is the “dislike of or prejudice against transsexual or transgender people.”
There are many controversial topics that we see on a daily basis through the media. Some of the topics that we are exposed to are race, stereotypes, sexism and sex. These things seem to be a key factor in how media makes its presence felt. Whether it is through T.V. shows, how stereotypes and race are still a common trend in present day movies. I believe that stereotyping is everywhere you look movies and T.V. in particular but also music.
According to Lippmann, “stereotypes are ‘pictures in our heads’ that we use to apprehend the world around us” (16). Stereotypes can be formed due to effects of media, as Wood describes media as pervasive, powerful and influential (31). Hence, stereotypes can be defined as inaccurate perceptions towards a group of people or community that is strongly influenced by the media. Whether positive or negative, stereotypes are usually false as they are formed based on personal judgments, which are biased or exaggerated. When stereotypes are consistently portrayed in media platforms, they subconsciously form and maintain assumed identities for the stereotyped groups.
Hollywood is the home of flashing cameras, the famous red carpet, and glamorous celebrities. Hollywood is also the birthplace of extraordinary films which reach audiences across the world. The casting choices made by the film industry affects more than just the movie that is created. Hollywood directors and writers should have the social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters because the stereotypes offer poor (and often inaccurate) insight into the culture, negatively impacts child viewers, and limits the amount of quality roles for actors/actresses with diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Life is a symphony composed of three distinct movements, a lot of people, a few people, and almost no one; each of them is affected by stereotypes. "Stereotypes may be defined as popular beliefs about specific social groups or types of individuals and are broadly standardized or simplified conceptions of groups based on some prior assumptions,"*Stereotypes are present an incomplete, subjective and sometimes false image of the reality. They are often based on traditions and are resistant to change. Although they can have positive and negative effects, ; the last is much more common and easily spread throughout social institutions, such as mass media, that which is using stereotypes, based on the assumption , that they are well known to everyone and help the receivers to understand the content of the message. Stereotypes have a negative effect when it published throughout the mass media.
Media are platforms of mass communication that can be categorized as either new of traditional media, with new media being forms of communication that make use of technologies such as the Internet, and traditional media being more conventional forms of media such as newspapers. Media, primarily new media, is getting more popular and influential, especially in today’s day and age since we are exposed to it a lot more than in the past and also since media is more easily accessible now. The media can shape our behaviours, perceptions and opinions, and it is important to know how people are influenced and impacted by it. The media can influence someone’s perception of social reality, or perceptions of beauty or even influence people’s behaviours and habits and therefore, the media does shape who we are. One way that the media can shape who we are is by influencing our perception of social reality.
