Neil Armstrong was an engineer, pilot, college professor, and most famously known for being an astronaut. Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio August 5, 1930. The first time Armstrong flew in a plane was when he was just six years old and loved it ever since. After attending high school, he went to college at Purdue University, but during his time there, he went to be a Navy pilot in the Korean War from 1949 to 1952. Once returning from the Korean War, Armstrong went back to college at the University of Ohio. In 1956, Neil married Janet Shearon on January 28th. Once reaching space, Collins disconnected his aircraft from Armstrong and Aldrin’s. Collins then stayed on his Command Module and circled around the moon while Aldrin and Armstrong landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon, while Edwin Aldrin was a close second. Armstrong’s famous quote while stepping on the moon was, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” After being on the moon for two and a half hours, collecting samples, taking pictures, and conducting experiments, the two astronauts left the moon, reconnected with Collins, and headed back to Earth. () Collins, Armstrong, and Aldrin landed in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969, and were then rescued by U.S.S. Hornet. Once being brought back to land, those three astronauts were then put in a quarantine (a state, period, or place of isolation in which people or animals that have arrived from elsewhere or been exposed to infectious or contagious disease are placed) (oxforddictionaries.com, 2015) for three weeks.
