Adolescence is a challenging time, when young people must learn their place in the world, and develop an ability to interact with others. In Neil Gaiman’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,” the disconnected feeling of youth is exaggerated when Enn and his friend Vic accidentally stumble into a party full of female aliens, where their ability to communicate is put to the test. During his time, Enn evolves into a character who sees the world from a more adult perspective. Initially, by listening to others, Enn learns to accept and embrace differences, which allows him to see the world from another point of view. Also, in openly sharing ideas with the girls at the party, Enn is exposed to experiences he has not encountered in his own lives, which allows him to see new choices which are available to him, and to overcome his social fears. Finally, because Enn engages in thoughtful dialogue he avoids conflict or misunderstandings which pose barriers to communication for his friend Vic. Although adolescents may find communication challenging, communicating with others is essential for personal growth, because it exposes young adults to new ideas and different perspectives.
