Author Lewis Carroll once said, “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” Throughout Jamie Ford’s novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, the reader can see that once the past is brought up, more conflict occurs. As the characters in the book interact with one another, each of them change in different ways. Ford creatively includes unique struggles throughout the family and friends surrounding Henry in order to show growth. This novel helps shape Henry’s character by exploring many conflicts that push Henry to face his problems and learn from them.
After reading it I do not view our society the same, and I most definitely do not view our education system the same. I will take what I learned from this story and apply it in my classroom as a teacher. I will be empathetic towards each and every student and their family and where they come from. There is value in every culture and if we take the time to understand it we will build more relationships than we could ever imagine. The professor, to me, was trying to make the listener feel the anguish that African Americans did in the 1920s. In some sense he appeared passionate and at times angry about the treatment of African Americans. The government supported this hostile treatment because they believed African Americans were being subversive if they stood up and defended themselves.

I am writing this paper after successfully completing my first half year of college on campus at Dakota Wesleyan University. I have done numerous things here during the fall semester of 2015 that have helped me mature and ultimately grow into a stronger person. My Learn Strong 101 class taught me some essentials that helped me with getting through the semester. One of the first things that I completed in this class was campus clarity. I think that this was a very helpful program.
