Nelson Mandela, one of the most recognizable human rights symbols of the twentieth century, is a man whose dedication to the liberties of his people inspires human rights advocates throughout the world. He is considered a contemporary hero and fought for Democracy and Freedom during the racist movement known as the Apartheid. He spent 27 years of his life in prison and rejected liberty so he could continue fighting for his ideals. He was the first black president in South Africa, eventually achieving a social change that unified white and black people together. In addition he used an ancient sport considered a symbol representing white oppression over black people to continue bringing people together in peace. Then he earned respect from all over the world. Mandela earned a Nobel Peace Prize and still considered a great hero today, it’s legacy continues with his solidary actions that contributed to the research for a HIV/AIDS cure.

In 1962, he was arrested by South African security police for his opposition to the white government and its apartheid policies of racial, political, and economic discrimination against the non-white majority. Thus, this allowed him to be eligible to democratically become South Africa’s first black president, elected by the people. I his term, Mandela passed to history by being the man who made possible the union of black and white people, a social change achieved through non-violence. “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.” This statement clearly shows his thoughts, defining him as a leader who disregarded hostilities and showed caring love for his country. Those are qualities most “leaders” in today’s world
