Narwin, like the assistant principal suggested and get on with his life. However, he stood strong saying he was expressing his patriotism. People might say he was definite because Ms. Narwin was purposely giving him bad grades. At the beginning of the book we find out that Philip is a great athlete and the star of the track team. However, when his grade in English stops him from being on the team, Philip starts making up lies to cover it up instead of just telling the truth. While having a conversation with his father he tells him that he doesn’t want to try out for the track team. He says, “I, ah…was thinking I wouldn’t try out” (Nothing 29).
Another negative attribute of Phillip is his short temper. An example of Phillips short temper is on page 45 to 46 when he becomes infuriated with his situation and starts punching Timothy. He is even angry with his mom and blames her for putting him in the situation he is in. His bad temper comes out again every time Timothy forgets that he is blind and asks him to look at something.

In the narrative, a grandmother is going on a trip to Florida with her son and his family. Throughout the story she attempts to manipulate everyone she comes across and acts as though she is above or better than others. She frequently uses the terms “good” and “common” people, categorizing people based on her own interpretation of them or their social standing. The family encounters an escaped prisoner, the Misfit, and two of his accomplices.

At the beginning stages of O’Connor’s story we are introduced to our characters, Bailey (the father), June Star (the daughter), John Wesley (the son), the mother, the baby, and the focal point of the story the grandmother.

What are good men? Good men are the elect children of God. They are good because Christ is in them. However, they are still totally depraved, but they have the Holy Spirit working in their hearts so that they can do good works. They are also good because they hate sin and love God, who is good.
Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a short story that tells of a disturbing and tragic chain of events following a family that wrecks their car on a back road in Florida. The family consists of a father named Bailey, his mother, wife, and their three young children. The chaotic family decides to take a detour and see a plantation the grandmother once saw. The conflict of the story begins when the family wrecks their car on the way and are stranded waiting for help, but the climax and resolution soon follows once they are met by a group of escaped, murderous convicts.
