The novels Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Maas, and Lord of the Flies by William Golding are very different, but some comparisons can be made between the three. Never Let Me Go and Crown of Midnight have contrasting antagonists, but they have similarities in theme. Lord of the Flies and Never Let Me Go both have main characters who played the outcast. In these way, the three novels can be compared. In Never Let Me Go, the author chooses to have no antagonist. The novel mostly focuses on the internal struggles between a group of friends and the outside forces that affect them. Any possible antagonists, such as doctors, scientists, or the world leaders who decided to use clones as medical supplies, are not present in the novel. Therefore, there is no visible antagonist in Never Let Me Go. In contrast to this, the author of Crown of Midnight makes the antagonists very obvious, …show more content…

Tommy in Never Let Me Go is prone to tantrums and fits of anger. “We’d all seen plenty of Tommy’s tantrums”--(Ishiguro 9). “I’m not sure when the big temper tantrums started.”--(Ishiguro 19). This isolates Tommy, to the point of even being picked last for a sport he is good at. Tommy’s inability to be creative also hinders his social life and makes him a loner. Likewise, Piggy in Lord of the Flies is also an outcast. Piggy is described as a fat boy who wears glasses. His physical attributes set him apart from the other boys on the island, who are either athletic or thin, and none of them wear glasses. Piggy’s sarcastic comments, judgemental attitude, and logical thinking alienate him. Add that to constant whining and Piggy quickly becomes the butt of many jokes and the target of lots of teasing. Both Tommy and Piggy are protagonists who act as outcasts in their novels, and in this way, Lord of the Flies and Never Let Me Go are
