The article “New Maps Reduce Threats to Whales and Dolphins” is a very interesting article. In this article it explains that researchers have created a map so that seasonal movements of dolphins and whales swimming through the US East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Many of these whales and dolphins are on the threatened or endangered list, which is why we should pay more attention to these animals. They need to be studied so we can save them. The “maps give government agencies and other interested parties better tools to help protect these highly mobile animals and guide future ocean planning, including decisions about the siting of wind energy and oil and gas exploration along our coasts" (Duke University). It can help save many of our ocean creatures lives. It is important because other scientists can also use this map to study dolphin and whale migration patterns. This information is very important because it can save these marine animals from going extinct. A lot of our ocean life needs our help. I believe every species is very important and has a use in our environment. By having knowledge about marine mammals, society can help protect these animals from fishing boats and traps, offshore energy development and pollution. We really need this information to help save these animals. This map can also be useful for tourists who want to go whale and dolphin watching. It is very valuable information to have and we need to put this valuable information to good use. There are many benefits this map can bring to our society. "Insights provided by these new maps can be very influential in shaping the outcomes of these decisions because population density estimates are used by U.S. government agencies to enforce the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act" (Duke University). This new information will most likely create new rules and regulations for oil companies to protect the marine mammals while still being able to look for resources.
