Each challenge that is encountered has factors that impact the organization as a whole. With change of leadership, the new leader has to build a positive rapport with all employees within the organization. Generally, when there is a change in leadership, there is change that will occur within the organization and to the culture. Though leaders cannot control an organization’s culture, they influence it (Morgan, 2006). Recently, for Newport News Shipbuilding, a new president was appointed in 2017. The new leader has brought new ideas to the organization that will redesign the organization’s culture. When change occurs a plan should be implemented to ensure the change is communicated correctly and accepted well by the employees. Ultimately, when this change occurs the culture is affected. Culture changes are often difficult for the leaders cascading information downwards, because their decision making and processes for their individual department are affected (Darga, 2012). This change then causes the leaders to react and remain proactive to keep their department relevant and ensure that all task and duties are still aligned with the company’s goal during the transitional period. To address the changes and uncertainty that occurs from the environment, Newport News Shipbuilding has different department to handle each aspect of the complex, specialized environment. This high differentiation between the departments makes collaboration difficult (Daft, 2016). Ultimately, collaboration difficulty can be seen and competition between leaders affects the leadership dynamics because there is a lack of integration between departments.
