Jewish people were taken from their homes during the 1930s-1940s by Nazis and imprisoned in concentration camps, where they faced either death or forced work. The Jewish people were tortured, starved, physically abused, and verbally humiliated by the Nazis. The book “Night” by Elie Wiesel is about his journey through the Holocaust. He grew up in Sighet with his parents and three siblings. He was devoted to his Jewish religion, until the Nazis came. First, they forced them into ghettos. Then, the Nazis forced them into trains that took them to Auschwitz. Next, his mother and younger sister were killed by the Nazis. This act of kindness made them want to not give up. Another act of kindness that made the people in the camps have hope was when an officer at the camps would often smile, wave, or make a friendly gesture to the people. This made them feel happier and may have brought them up on days that they were feeling down. In the book “Night” on page 47 it says, “He gave an impression of kindness. From time to time, a smile would linger in his gray-blue eyes.” This shows that the officer was very kind to them. It also says on page 47, “The officer took an interest in them and gave orders to bring them food.” This shows that the officer was not just kind, but also generous. These acts of kindness, though small in the Holocaust, had a big impact on the prisoners well-being. It reminded them that even in the darkest times, there was still the potential for kindness and decency. It showed them their worth and dignity, which the Nazis tried to take away from them.
