Summary
Johnny and his blonde sister Barbara are going to visit their father’s grave, when a zombie shows up and kills Johnny. Barbara runs to a nearby house where she eventually finds a black man named Ben. Ben is a strong and quick thinking leader. Ben boards up all the downstairs doors and windows. Ben and Barbara are unaware of the cellar behind a closed door. A middle aged man named Mr. Cooper, and a young man Tom come upstairs and Mr. Cooper tries to force everyone downstairs. Ben says it would be dumb to go down there as there is no exit. This relates to “Night of the Living Dead”, in the way that the zombies are a group of motivated offenders and the survivors are the suitable targets. Harry tries to accuse Ben of putting his family’s life at risk. Ben and Harry argue about pretty much everything, because Harry wants to criminalize Ben. He wants everyone else to see himself as a leader, and the best way to do that is to make Ben same weak. Harry is searching for somewhat of a scapegoat, and the best person to fit that need is Ben.
Punishment- Receiving disciplinary action for a wrongdoing. The word “Punishment” relates to the motion picture because when someone did something that deserved to be penalized, it would always come back to them. It says hedonism states that ,”Pleasure and pain are the only things of ultimate importance”. In a way, this makes me think that hedonism and the “Routine Activities Theory” were used in unison in this movie. By this I mean when motivated offenders and suitable targets converge, hedonism will emerge in some people. Rather than doing what it takes to survive, Barbara is doing whatever she can to stay sane, and happy. For her, the best way to do that is to lie to herself about Johnny being alive. “ Non-philosophers tend to think of a hedonist as a person who seeks out pleasure for themselves without any particular regard for their own future well-being or for the well-being of others”.
