In the book Night, Elie Wiesel mentions numerous instances of dehumanization that he experienced during the Holocaust. One moment that left a lasting impression on me was when the Jews were referred to only as a number, completely wiped of their identity. They were forced to wear ill-fitting clothes, sleep in small abodes in horrible conditions. The Nazis were merciless towards the Jewish people during the Holocaust. They saw them as something to be eradicated, to rid the world of, rather than as human beings. Which is what they were doing. Another quote that spoke to me was “I became A-7713”. From then on, I had no other name." (Wiesel 42)] The Jewish people were not even granted the simple pleasure of being referred to by their given names, names that were chosen for them with care and affection. It's unfortunate to imagine being forced to give up your inherent rights and being treated as an object with no value.
