Braasch Ms. Philipp English I Honors 8 March 2024 Pain, at times, can prevent people from seeing themselves as who they are. Some are givers of pain, while others are receivers. As a way to control others, some may use it to obtain what they wish for. Eliezer Wiesel shows this occur in his memoir Night, where he tells his experiences in the Nazi owned concentration camps. Elie is subject to a lot of pain during the Holocaust. In Eliezer Wiesel’s memoir Night, due to the dehumanization the Jews faced during the Holocaust, his relationships are taken from him and his faith dwindles. Elie’s relationship was cut off, as he was split from his mother and younger sister in the camps. As a young boy, Elie had the choice to go with his mother when they were separated. In addition to his loss of relationships Elie also begins to lose his faith due to the conditions that he suffered through. Elie faces enough dehumanization throughout his experiences in the camp that he views himself as less than human, and he starts to question if God is truly there. After being in the concentration camps for multiple months, Elie is sent to Buna and begins working in a warehouse for electrical parts. After a few weeks in Buna, Elie stated “I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less: a famished stomach”(Wiesel 52). In Buna, Elie has been fed so little that he begins to live his day-to-day waiting for his next meal.
