Eliezer doesn’t want to keep living in this camp, getting a lot of work, not eating a lot, and getting punishments from time to time. When Eliezer is under a bunch of dead and alive people he says “I succeeded in digging a hole through this wall of dying people, a little hole through which I could drink in a small quantity of air. Father, how are you? I asked, as soon as I could utter a word.” This shows how Eliezer didn’t want to die here and to live, he dug a tiny hole for him to breathe some air in. This shows Eliezer’s constant resistance to death and wanting to live through these hard trials, he would do anything to stay alive. Eliezer had feelings of just wanting to die so that all the pain would end and he almost did, but he doesn’t though and continues to live on. This also shows how as soon as he can breathe and ensure that he is going to live, he calls for his dad to see if he is okay. It says in the quote that he said that as soon as he was even able to speak, the first thing he said was to see if his father was alive. His first priority was to make sure that he was alive and if he was okay, then his second priority was to see if his dad was alive
