Casablanca was a 1942 film about European citizens trying to escape from the Nazis by seeking refuge in America. On the other hand, Night by Elie Wiesel was about a young man’s journey inside a German concentration camp that traumatized him and changed his whole outlook on life. Although these great works of film and literature were different in their own right, they did come together with a similar central point: survival. In the film, Casablanca, numerous refugees sought help to flee Casablanca and enter America, the safe haven, due to the fear of being executed by the Nazis. The Nazis began taking over Europe and civilians started to feel frightened about future happenings. They sensed it was becoming unsafe and dangerous. Citizens went to great lengths to avoid the horrible thought. For instance, a Bulgarian woman, Mrs. Brandel, was willing to sleep around with a man in order to get a letter of transit for her and her husband. Eliezer and his father got separated from his mother and younger sisters. For months in the concentration camps, Eliezer witnessed inhumane doings that scarred him for the rest of his life. He was forced to work at Buna, a factory, and run on a daily basis to keep himself alive. He became malnourished because of the unappetizing food that they served. He and other Jews were punished and beaten for no reason. Although he was not physically fit to do the deeds that he was assigned to, he had no choice but to do so.
