Nilofer Merchant was able to turn her life around by walking the talk and encourages people to do the same. “Got a Meeting? Take a Walk” is a speech Nilofer Merchant wrote that she presented on TED in 2013. She expresses her concern for the amount of time our generation spends sitting. She believes we should spend more time walking around to improve our health and creativity. Merchant is hoping to get more people that spend their time sitting around, walking so they can change their lives like she did. She uses logos to bring more awareness to the issue at hand and her tone to let readers know the importance of what she’s preaching. They add things to the text in order to persuade the reader into listening or believing in what they have to say. Nilofer Merchant has personally taken on the challenge of walking. She holds walking meetings herself after going to her first walking meeting. She knew that she would be winded during the meeting she had while the other person walked their dog. After trying this new meeting style she became more healthy and more creative. Her experience serves as a living example of this new lifestyle working which gives her some more credibility. It worked well enough to create an entire TED Talk around it as well. Using the simple sentence, “It’s changed my life.” created a focus on the impact walking had on the her life. Pathos is the way the author uses emotion to persuade the readers into believing or listening to what they have to say. When people’s emotions are involved they are more likely to care about what they are learning about because it becomes more personal and easier to retain. Merchant starts her speech with “What you’re doing, right now, at this very moment, is killing you.” This was a great way to get the audience’s attention because it had their emotions involved. People are often afraid of dying and are willing to try almost anything to push their death back as far as they can. Using this at the very beginning was Mechant’s attempt to capture the audience from the start so she could relay her message effectively while the audience is engaged. “Things like breast cancer and colon cancer are directly tied to our lack of physical activity.” Bringing attention to health risks attached to not being active can be effective because it allows the audience to reflect and become scared for their own lives.
