In Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, the narrator presents a totalitarian world where there is no freedom and the people are being brainwashed. The government is trying to follow all the people's daily activities. That is strong irony, because it is impossible to happen in the democratic countries nowadays. In particular, they are censoring all the people’s information not unlike a few current world nations such as North Korea. Without any motivation to fight against the government, the citizens follow "Big Brother" with no doubts. In order to fall under their control, and to limits people’s thoughts and freedom, they create fear through propaganda which all must listen to. In Oceania, there is no rival government, no casual sex, and no privacy. Restrictions are everywhere in peoples’ lives. These laws are nonexistent nor written in text, since paper and other necessities do not exist in the lives of regular citizens. Although laws do not exist, the party can find any reason to detain a person in Oceania. This is exactly how fear is created, as the citizens never live in privacy. Every move is being watched and analyzed. Winston, the protagonist, can live as he wishes but “it [is] a fact that if Syme grasp[s], even for three seconds, the nature of his … secret opinions, he [will] betray him instantly to the Thought Police” (page56). There are no exact laws to defined thought crimes. However, Winston can be arrested any time for committing thought crime by the government. The best way to have under control is to instill fear. The government wants to control the citizens because they can be a “force to destroy the party … from within” (page72). Besides, the proletariat is also a factor for controlling people by the government. Unlike the citizens being controlled in every aspect, the proletariat can do as they wish. They have no idea what life is like outside of Oceania and do not question life in itself.
