Koi are or more specifically in Japan as nishikigoi translated to brocaded carp, they are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Koi has many varieties that are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are in Koi white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties. They are different kinds of koi. They think the koi is being stole but it is just being eaten by the birds who decide to eat. The author could be linking the koi to different things that are happening in Tangerine and to show something weird maybe going on. To show that the people in Tangerine are oblivious. They do not see what is really there. They see what is not there. They do not notice that there is something going on. They do not notice anything wrong. In the novel all the Koi are gone and that maybe makes Paul think that all the people in the town of Tangerine are not smart and also foolish for making the purchase. It starts the suspicion that there is something going on within the town and that Tangerine is not a perfect town. It could relate to the theme of some people are blind and cannot see what is truly in their eye but some can and truly see what is really happening. The people living in Tangerine do not realize that the koi are being eaten they think they are being stolen. Also they could go with the theme of foolishness is not a thing that can be taught but something we gain. It relates to this quote because it was a foolish thing to buy the koi and put them in an open pond in the open.
