Politics and education go hand in hand with one another. From the 1600s to 2017, dame schools to higher education and standardized testing, education has come a long way. Activists such as Thomas Jefferson, Noah Webster, Horace Mann, and Jane Addams have helped shape education since the early days through implementing changes in society. The Common School Movement, Progressive Movement, diversity in schools, and Americanization have all had an effect on education in the past. The changes in politics and education continue, and recently we have been introduced to No Child Left Behind, National Assessment of Education Progress, and Mississippi Curriculum Testing that are all having an effect on schools and education.
A recap of previous political findings includes the path to free public education, vocational training, high schools, etc. Originally the Native Americans were acculturated to fit the European’s ideas of education and their way of life. Although it was implemented to hold accountability, some of it is faulting. It tries to be a “one-size fits all” program, but is flawed in a few ways. Helen Ladd in Education Digest suggests that No Child Left Behind also inhibits teachers from taking new approaches to education.

“The current test-based approach to accountability is far too narrow. Our aspirations for education and schools are far broader than teaching children how to do well on multiple choice tests in subjects such as math and reading. Instead, we want children to develop the knowledge and skills that will enable them not just to succeed in the labor market but to be good citizens and to live rich and fulfilling lives, and to contribute to the flourishing of others”
