Connolly and Woollons (2008) suggested that people convicted of sexual offences are more likely to have experienced childhood abuse than Non-Sexual Offenders. The study examined the relationship between the crimes that prisoners committed and the childhood abuse, mainly sexual abuse that they were exposed to. (Curtis, Leung, Sullivan, Eschbach, & Stinson, 2001) The objective of the study was to test the relationship between sexual touching before puberty and later incarcerations in adolescence and adulthood. The sample used was a random sample of 3,362 adults ranging in age from 18 to 59 in the United States. The study used multivariate logistic and multinomial logistic regression models to investigate patterns of association between early childhood sexual touching and later incarceration. The findings were that prepubescent sexual touching has a significant and enduring effect on later adolescent and adult incarceration. Statistically significant effects of prepubescent sexual toughing on both potentially maladaptive teen behaviors and on the probability that legal problems in the late teens and adult years will result in a spell of incarceration.
