In the book, Shawn is confronted with an assistant OT by the name of Charlie who is filled with stories and humor. Humor can be an important factor as it can bring warmth allowing for a closer relationship between the patient and the health care provider. In the book Shawn talks about Charlie in a positive way, “Charlie was always humorous and he always had a story to tell” (Jennings, 2002, p.71). Although humor could potentially be an unsuccessful form of verbal communication because certain cultures believe different things and may not find the same things humorous. When using humor it is important to observe the patient and their vulture before trying to bring in a humorous topic in.
